Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Indicators for North Africa. (MEDINA)
MEDINA is a project funded by the European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013), designed to enhance Northern African Countries monitoring capacity of their coastal areas ecosystems, including fish stocks resources, and, consequently, their capacity to implement environmental policies, conventions and protocols. Supported by a strong European partnership, MEDINA focuses on the Mediterranean coasts of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt.
MEDINA aims at enhancing Northern African Countries' monitoring capacity of their coastal and marine areas ecosystems, and consequently their abilities to implement environmental policies, conventions and protocols.
The plan to enhance those States monitoring capacity relies on a scientific and technology transfer approach, starting from the solid European experience in Mediterranean coasts management and active participation across GEO activities and Communities of Practice.
The UPO group is leader in WP3: They are responsible for ensuring the exploitation of the GEOSS GCI (Global Earth Observation System of Systems Common Infrastructures) capabilities at the maximum extent possible for supporting stakeholders and end users in ongoing monitoring and assessment of coastal marine ecosystem. Mainly, UPO group will be responsible for the development of the necessary interoperability arrangements to register the MEDINA components, such as the registration of the specific special interoperability arrangements to the GCI SIR (Standard Interoperability Registry) following the registration procedure managed by the GEO SIF (Standard and Interoperability Forum).
UPO group, as WP leader, will contribute to develop a set of guidelines and procedures with the aim of disseminating and applying the GCI System of Systems technological requirements, as well as design solutions.

MEDINA contributes to develop the framework for issuing long term monitoring programs through mutual exchanges among Mediterranean partners, between North Africa and Europe: the EU partners, leaded by University Ca' Foscari-Venice (Italy), act according to the EU regulatory framework, particularly the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC of 17 June 2008), transferring their capacity to North African Countries.
Due to the natural and political configuration of the Mediterranean basin, MEDINA's outcomes mark a step forward towards the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. Particular attention goes to meeting the forthcoming deadlines posed by this Strategy, for which a closer and more active cooperation with North African countries is necessary beyond strongly encouraged.
