SPIKE will develop a software platform for the easy and fast setup of business alliances. The project targets two main organizational objectives: first, outsourcing parts of the value chain to business partners (and vice versa, offering such parts in form of services); second, enabling collaboration between members of participating organizations through ad-hoc created as well as predefined business processes.

The work of the research group will guarantee that all software components as applied and newly developed within the project adhere to widely accepted state-of-the-art security standards. Security hereby implies software security (in terms of communication security, user authentication, encryption, access control) as well as operative security (with regards to Basel II conformity). Focus of activities lies on authentication and access control for services and workflows. Developed tools include the security architecture, security components for Portal System and Service Bus as well as the Identity Management Service.

The main output of SPIKE is a platform for the fast and easy set-up of alliances that allows enterprises to collaborate. SPIKE platform consists of several components: a portal, a service bus, a semantic modeling block and an Identity Management infrastructure. Horizontally tho all these components a security framework that allows all the collaborations to happen in a secure way. The existence of a SPIKE Identity management system is mainly beneficial for SMEs that sometimes neither have the money nor the resources to own their own.

Through the efficient support of building and managing networked organizations, SPIKE will develop competitive advantage for companies and organizations participating in the alliance because of a) excellence: each alliance partner can bring in its core competences, b) utilization: resources of partners will be integrated and utilized more profitably, c) opportunism: market opportunity will be met better together than by each individual company, and d) reducing costs of time for setting up and maintaining the business alliances. As a consequence SPIKE will help companies to develop and adapt new business models that distinguish their offerings from those of their competitors.
